Dirty Dozen + Clean 15 Too Hard to Remember? Here’s What I do Instead!

I can never remember the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15.

You know those lists? The ones telling you which produce is loaded with pesticides (buy organic!) and which is mostly clean (save your money).

They’re great… in theory.

But living in a small rural spot like Lake Arrowhead? Our organic section is tiny. Changes weekly.

So here’s what I do instead.

A dead-simple 3-category rule that keeps pesticides out of my kitchen. No memorizing required

What Are the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15?

The Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 are yearly lists that rank fruits and veggies by how much pesticide residue they usually have.

The “Dirty” list is the stuff that tends to test high for pesticide residues, so those are the ones people often try to buy organic when they can.

The “Clean” list is the produce that usually shows much lower levels, so most people feel fine buying those conventional to save a little money.

The problem? The lists change, they’re long, and if you’re busy or standing in a tiny produce aisle, you’re probably not scrolling a chart on your phone.

That’s why I stopped trying to memorize them and started using a simple rule I can remember in about two seconds.

My 3-Category Rule for Organics

Instead of memorizing lists, I think in three simple buckets when I’m shopping:

  1. Spices
If I’m buying dried herbs and spices that came out of the ground, I try to grab organic when I can.
Things like garlic powder, onion powder, turmeric, cumin, paprika, dried basil, etc. have all that soil contact, and I use them constantly, so I’d rather they be cleaner.
In my kitchen, that looks like swapping my most-used basics for organic versions, like an everyday garlic powder and an organic taco seasoning blend.
  2. Root veggies
Roots pull from whatever is in the soil, so I prioritize organic when we’re eating the whole thing.
Think potatoes, carrots, beets, radishes, parsnips, sweet potatoes.
If the budget or options are tight, I’ll choose organic potatoes over something like a thick-skinned squash, because we’re eating the whole potato, skin and all.
  3. Thin-skinned, water-heavy fruits
If it’s juicy and has a thin skin, I mentally bump it higher on my “organic if possible” list.
Berries, grapes, peaches, nectarines, apples, pears, and even things like cucumbers feel worth the extra care if I can find them in decent shape.
So if I see a good-looking pack of organic strawberries or a bag of organic apples, I’ll grab those and happily buy conventional on something a little more protected.

That’s it. Spices, roots, and thin-skinned, watery fruits get first dibs on my organic budget, and everything else becomes a flexible “nice if I can, totally fine if I can’t.”

At the end of the day, I’m not chasing a perfect, pesticide-free kitchen—I’m just trying to make better choices with the options I actually have. This little three-part rule has taken so much pressure off: I focus on organic where it matters most for us (spices, roots, and those thin-skinned, juicy fruits), and let the rest be flexible depending on what’s in stock and what fits the budget that week. If you’ve ever stood in the produce aisle feeling overwhelmed by lists and labels, try this instead on your next trip and see how it feels—you might be surprised by how much calmer and more doable it makes the whole “eating cleaner” thing.
